EcoMil offers two “sugar-free” and “unsweetened” drinks in Tetra Brik:  EcoMil Almond milk sugar-free Bio 1 L and EcoMil Almond milk sugar-free calcium Bio 1 L. According to the European regulation No 1924/2006 they contain less than 0.5 g of total sugars per 100 ml and are free from ingredients used for their sweetening properties. However, these two organic almond milks contain a small amount of naturally occurring sugars up to 0.1 g per 100 ml.

12) What is the total sugars content in our organic almond milks in powder?

According to the nutritional analysis of our “Ecomil almond milk instant bio 400 g” per 100 g of powder we have 13.4 g of total sugars. However when stirring the powder the water to make the milk (about 10 g of powder in 100 ml of water), we obtain about 1.22 g of total sugars per 100 ml of reconstituted almond milk. According to the European regulation No 1924/2006, the claim “low sugars” can only be used for liquid products which contain a value of total sugars inferior to 2.5 g per 100 ml. Therefore, our EcoMil organic almond milk in powder reconstituted with water is “low sugars”.

13) What is the calcium content in EcoMil organic Almond milks?

Among EcoMil organic almond milks with “added calcium” the calcareous marine algae lithothamnium calcareum supplements the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of calcium. Those containing at least 120 mg of calcium per 100 ml (15% of the RDI) are considered as “source of calcium”. However, we must be honest towards consumers and not exaggerate the calcium claim. Actually, there is no dairy-free drinks naturally “source of calcium”. That is to say, all non-enriched dairy-free drinks available in the market (soy, oat, rice, almond … whatsoever the brand) do not reach the minimum of 15% of RDI to legally use the claim “source of calcium”. Only dairy-free drinks with “added in calcium” reaching the 15% of RDI in calcium can use the claim “source of calcium”.

19) Can I recycle EcoMil packaging?

EcoMil packaging are 100% recyclable. However, the recycling rate is different according to the collection and recycling infrastructures of each country.

20) How are recycled EcoMil Tetra Brik packaging?

Here is the official answer from our packaging supplier Tetra Pak Spain:  www.tetrapak.com/es

Our packages are 100% recyclable. However, that doesn’t mean that they are 100% recycled. The collection rate differs in different countries (depending on collection infrastructure) and whether 100 %, or for instance 80 % of the collected packages are actually recycled, depending on the paper mill that recycles them.

In general we can say that of the selectively collected packages, at least the share of paper fibres is recycled (this is about 75% of our packages). When it comes to the plastic/aluminium part, this depends on the paper mill.

In Spain for instance most of the packages are recycled at the Stora Enso paper mill in Barcelona. This company has also invested in a pyrolysis operation. This pyrolysis process separates the plastic from the aluminium and transforms the plastic part partly in a gas, and partly in oil, which are both used as an energy source for the recycling operation and for the paper production. The aluminium is made into briquettes which are re-melted into various products by the aluminium industry.

Technically speaking, after separation from the aluminium in the pyrolysis reactor, the plastic part could also be condensed again and reused as a material for recycled plastic products. But the mill has opted to use it as an energy source, replacing natural gas.

The final result is, in both cases, zero waste!”
